I once knew a man who was a master at his art. The secrets that he knew set him apart and enkindled brilliance was the mark. Discipline and dignity inspired curiosity and he was a great man to me. A very clever man, who played chess just as a hobby and for the fun he got from the game. Grand masters fell under the spell of the moves that he made. The Woman in Trouble’s experiences in this basic scenario involve men, and the Nameless Woman begins telling her story to Mr. K accordingly: “there was a man I once knew.” She stops herself just before revealing his identity because it ‟[ ] doesn’t matter what his name was [ ]” and more importantly ‟all men reveal themselves.

The book was set in early 's (possibly WW1 era) and she lived in the french country side. Although the book is set in France, the book is in english. Anyway, somewhere in the book, the two sisters meet a man- Claude I think his name is- and they befriend him (i don't think the girls tell their mother about Claude). 3 And I know that this man—whether in the body or out of it I do not know, but God knows— 4 was caught up to Paradise. The things he heard were too sacred for words, things that man is not permitted to tell. 5 I will boast about such a man, but I will not boast about myself, except in my weaknesses..
